we're back with the a-team, monica, your thoughts. >> yes, i just want to remind steve that the president was not too biz to personally hand select beyonce to sing national anthem at the inaugural. >> it is beyonce after all, not your 8 average citizens it is beyonce. >> yes, the -- >> steve said that with a certain amount of emotion. >> i think that they found the only 8 citizens who have benefitted by president obama. lou: you are not on the top, i can assure you that. speaking on the news, bob shafer talking about the president's comments, as he announced his proposal, look how he compares president obama taking on gun owners. >> surely, fines osama bin laden surely passing civil rights legislation, as lyndon johnson did, and surely defeating nazis, waa much more form it able task than taking on the gun lobby. this is a turning point in this country. and the president, is going to have to to do more than just make a speech about it, this is one of the best speeches i heard him deliver. but it will take more than that from the white house, he will have to get his han

and for the nation that re-elected the president. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. >>> president obama never used the words "democrat" or "republican" in his second inaugural address, but his political message was crystal clear. a full-throated embrace of progressive policies, along with a directive for our leaders to spear head the challenges that define us as individuals and as a country. >> the commitments we make to each other through medicare, medicaid and social security, these things do not sap our initiative. they strengthen us. they do not make us a nation of takers. they free us to take the risks that make this country great. we will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. we, the people, still believe enduring security and lasting peace do not require perpetual war. and we must be a source of hope to the poor, the sick, the marginalized. the victims of prejudice. our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law. our journey is not comp

. [laughter] >> and you're doing a great job. >> thank you, boo boo. thank you, steve. teaching my students, under studies at georgetown university, but before i continue with this process, i just wanted to also thank the members of the presidential inaugural committee who provided us with tickets. i hope you got tickets if you didn't see them, and their amazing work and, really, putting together a very exciting weekend here in our nation's capitol. i want to thank them for the day of service that not only took place here in washington, d.c., but across the united states of america. millions of people signed up, volunteered, and made a difference. dr. martin luther king, jr. would have been proud we used his birthday weekend not just to party and celebrate, but to remember what he called us often to do, and that, ladies and gentlemen, is to serve and to answer the call, and, yet, i want to thank the dnc staff and others who worked throughout the christmas and throughout the holidays to ensure we also had a good time as well. so my only thing, i was working yesterday. you want me to shut up?

so. representative steve stockman from texas said "i will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the whouite house and filing articles of impeachment." digging in his heels president obama says he will not trade cuts in spending in exchange for raising the borrowing limit. he says trimming the budget deficit should be a different discussion. >> to even entertain the idea of this happening, of the united states of america not paying its bills, is irresponsible. >> house speaker john boehner responded to this by saying the american people do not support raising the debt ceiling without reducing government spending at the same time. you can see the battle lines there very clearly. are you in hawaii or headed there? think twice. beware of getting in the water. check out this video. that's right, sharks near oahu's yokohama beach, two sharks were spotted swimming very, very dangerously close to the shore. i hope that guy's feet are not in the water. >> wow, that is super shallow. >> if steve stock

in lake michigan causing cargo ships and barges to liken their loads. connell: let's go to steve now on how it can impact your wallet. >> because we have had such low water levels, it will impact your wallet. it has been dry in the region. we have had light rains in the summertime in that has produced lower water levels in all of the great lakes. if you are wondering just how low it is, we have a graphic to show you. between 87 and 97, the water drop a foot. between 94 another foot lower. it is at historic low water levels in lake michigan. cargo companies will have to carry less. >> you cannot strike bottom. you have to maintain a safe distance. when the water levels go down, we have to reduce our load. >> the catch is that when you are shipping the very biggest loads by boat is the cheapest way. you can go by train, you can go by truck, what have you. if you are going to try to get there, you need to ship by barge or five oh. >> we have a lot of manufacturers here along the river system. you take away the barge auction, you could see ten, 20, 25% increase. that gets passed onto the

representative steve toath. representative, thanks so much for joining us. we're intrigued because you proposed legislation that would make it illegal in texas for anyone to enforce a federal ban, shall we say, on assault weapons or high-capacity magazines. here's the question. if the federal government, if the house and the senate pass this legislation that the president is asking for, he signs it into law, everyone in the united states would have to obey the law. how would you avoid obeying the law? >> in texas, we're going to do everything we can, wolf. first off, thanks for having me on. we're going to do everything we can to call people back to the belief and the understanding that we're a constitutional republic and that our rights do not come from congress. our rights come from god and are enumerated in the constitution. what they're proposing, and here's what i really want to stress, he said that we will be judged. our generation will be judged based on how we deal with this. cotton candy political solutions aren't going to fix this problem. >> but the congress, by the constitution, has

idea that senator wyden of oregon has been working with us and one, a newer idea that steve and i dreamed up in a bar in italy a few years. first of all, the president has been talking about stimulating the economy with transportation infrastructure investment. ron wyden of oregon and a republican from north dakota have been pushing for a trip bond program, $50 billion to be distributed, $1 billion to every state. we love the program, but it is going to help metro states, urban states. this concept of oregon and north dakota senators is a billion to go out to every state, so little states and big states all get the same benefit. this would be distributed over six years and the cost to the treasury would be paid for. and there would be no debt incurred at the state level. we think that that proposal has tremendous potentials. senator hoeven came by to speak to us last year and wyden last year. mentioned your program and we would love to see it. the next thing i want to put on the table and this should scare the pants off of all of you. this is real and this is jack's work, so you k

, america can meet the test of a new day. my brother steve, the inventor, innately grasps this challenge. so must we. the speaker pro tempore: the gentlewoman's time has expired. for what purpose does the gentlelady from california seek recognition? >> to address the house for one minute. the speaker pro tempore: without objection, the gentlewoman is recognized for one minute. >> mr. speaker, i also rise to recognize the 40th anniversary of the supreme court roe v. wade decision this landmark decision granted american women the right to make their own personal health decisions. in consultation with her family and her faith and without government intrusion. mrs. capps: however, this right has been under steady attack in recent years with a clore goal, to make it so difficult to obtain a safe and legal abortion that it's become de facto illegal. but i'm among those who remember what what it was like when women were pushed into the shadows to get care and we cannot go back to that dangerous time. the truth is, none of us can walk in the shoes of each woman, facing an unwanted pregnancy. so let'
